An international laughing skills competition could be coming to Toronto, potentially the Olympics of Laughter.
The Just for Laughs Festival is looking at the World Laughter Games depending on a how an upcoming demonstration of the games goes this Saturday Nov21st in Toronto.
Competitive laughter games are being demoed at Saturday’s screening of Laughology, a documentary on the contagiousness of laughter featuring the man with the most contagious laugh on earth. Before the screening, there will be demonstrations of the events. Champion laughers will compete and some audience members will be allowed to compete on the spot.
Director of Laughology, Albert Nerenberg got the idea while traveling the world working on a documentary about laughter. The sudden rise in laughter exercise techniques have created new laughter games which when exercised improves health fitness and mood.
“It could be significant,” said Nerenberg. “Not only do laughter games promote health, immunity and good humor, they’re funny, because laughter is contagious.”
Nerenberg demoed one of the games, The Laugh Off at this year’s Idea City and it brought down the house.
The Laugh Off is a game where two contestants go head to head laughing at each other. The person who makes the other person seem funnier wins.
“This game can be quite extreme, “ says current Canadian Champion Victoria Danyluk.” People turn red, split their pants, and fall off the stage.
There are also individual competitions of most contagious laugh – the person who gets the most laughs out of an audience simply by laughing and the evil villain laugh, made famous by Hollywood star Mike Myers.
Laughter competitions are new and different from comedy competitions.
There have been small laughter competitions in India and Thailand but no one has tried to create an international competition although one is certainly coming.
The Just for Laughs festival is interested in the event says Nerenberg but because the idea is so new they wants to see how it would work. The half hour demonstration will take place right before the screening of Laughology.
Canadian Champions will be crowned at the event.
