TO BE FILMED FOR CANAL D’s RIRE EXTREME

Contestants and their fans will converge on Montreal October 27th 2010 for the first ever laughter competition -  Le Grand Championnat de Rire de Montreal.

Comedy contests are common, however this will be the world’s first televised laughing contest. Contestants across Quebec will compete in diabolical laughter competitions, contagious laughter face offs, and competitive laughter duels to see who will be crowned  “The Best Laugher in Quebec.”

Laughter Makes People Laugh

The Championnat is a based on the revolutionary concept that because laughter is contagious, laughing makes people laugh, so a good time will be had by all.

The Championnat involves games designed to produce natural contagious laughter.

The whole event is also being filmed for Rire Extreme, a documentary for CANAL D, being filmed about he development of the contest by Laughologist and filmmaker Albert Nerenberg. Nerenberg directed the hit documentary Laughology, the first film on laughter.

Laughology was recently featured on the BBC World Service.

“The documentary…opens the eyes of even the most miserable pessimist to the power of a good laugh,” the BBC reported.

Leonard Maltin called Laughoogy a “gem.”

Idea came from meeting “Man with most contagious laugh”

Nerenberg says he got the idea after meeting Doug Collins, an American who is said to have the most contagious laugh in the world. Nerenberg said he believed that because of Quebec’s tradition of Joie de Vivre they’re may be even better laughers in Quebec.

This summer Laughter contests where held at major Quebec festivals, including le Festival du Grand Rire in Quebec, The Western Festival of St. Tite and le Festival de Poutine du Drummonville. The winners of those contests have been invited to the Championnat which takes place at Salla Rossa in Montreal in a special ring.

Laughter as a “Competitive Sport”

”We found some extraordinary laughers,” said Nerenberg. “I’m afraid to imagine what happens when we get them all in the same room.”
Nerenberg said the idea of a laughter competition is to spread the positive, healthy emotions of laughter.

“We’re trying to prove that laughter could be a competitive sport,” he said.

“Canal is delighted to support this adventure,” said Canal D Vice-President of Programming Jean-Pierre Laurendeau. “Let’s see if this crazy idea could work.”

The event is set up in the manner of the ultimate fighting championship to show “that human confrontation can just as easily produce positives,” said Nerenberg.

One Last Spot Kept Open

Contestants are coming from around Quebec however, the organizers have left one spot open for one last great laugher.

Auditions will be held Oct 27th at Salla Rossa at 5 pm. Email hey@laughology.info to be put on the list.
